The inside face of the fort clearly illustrates the relatively small size of the casemate openings compared to those seen at other American coastal forts.


A bombproof barrack is located in the center of the parade of the fort. Orginally a one story structure, it was later expanded to two stories. It was also designed to serve as a last line of defense if the wall was breached and the fort stormed.
